The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds.

The castle, which is a marvel of architecture, is the brain child of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and it is said to have contributed to the ruin and eventual death of the king

Neuschwanstein Castle is constructed by gray granite. Construction began in 1869 and ended in 1886, in the year of the king’s death. The castle was never finished.

The fairy tale-like Neuschwanstein Castle was a dream project of the eccentric king Ludwig II of Bavaria, inspired by his love for the fantastical epics of German composer Richard Wagner. In time, it has become synonymous with a fairy tale castle, especially after Disney used it as basis for castles in their own animated fairy tales. However, unlike them, the creation of this marvel of late 19th century technology and architecture did not have a happy ending, and it is said to have contributed to the ruin and eventual death of the king
