Located in Eastern Odisha’s town of Konark, the Konark Sun Temple is a magnificent structure designed in the form of the grand celestial chariot carrying Lord Surya, the sun God. The temple was built in the thirteenth century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga Empire as a tribute to the sun God.

The Sun temple at Konarka, popularly known as ‘Black Pagoda’ was the fullest manifestation of the Kalinga style of architecture. The Sun temple of Konarka is remarkable for its variety of sculptures. Among them are the deities, musician-nymphs of the celestial sphere, secular sculptures, erotic figures, birds, beasts, acquatic animals, mythological figures, motifs reflected in figures, decorative bodies etc

The temple was built like a chariot of Sun god. The wheels of the chariot has lot of engraved art work around its axis and peripheries. There are 24 wheels fixed to the temple and having 8 spokes in each of them. All stone wheels are full with engraved art works. The 24 wheels signifies 24 hours of a day and the 8 spokes signifies Prahars (three hour period ) of a day. The wheels of the chariot are also symbolic and have been interpreted as the 'Wheel of Life'.

The eastern gateway which is the main entrance to the temple compound, is decorated with Gajasimha (Lion upon an elephant) images. According to the Hindu mythology, the lions resemble the pride, elephants resemble the wealth and both of them kill the human. The entire figure is made out of one piece of stone.

The Dhauli Shanti Stupa or the Peace Pagoda was built by the Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha in 1972. Built on the site where the famous Kalinga War was fought, the Dhauli Stupa commemorates the mission of peace that the Kalinga War achieved. Noted historian Shri. Ramesh Prasad Mohapatra aptly said “The political history of mankind in reality is a history of wars and no war has ended so successfully with a mission of peace for the entire war-torn humanity"
